Mindful Eating…

Nutrition plays an extremely large role in our lives and it seems to be the area where a lot of us struggle.  So many of us are BUSY.  ALL the time.  We rush from one place to another, prepare meals, do laundry, go grocery shopping, squeeze in our workouts, shuffle the kids around…the list goes on and on.

With the endless buzzing of technology and managing the daily grind, we find our nutrition often takes a hit.  We don’t have time to plan (or we don’t make time to plan), we eat while watching TV or while working at our desks or standing at the counter surfing Facebook.  We are not PRESENT.  We are not MINDFUL of what we are doing when we are doing it.

Making poor nutrition choices is just that, a CHOICE.  Is someone forcing you to eat that third piece of cake or are you making that choice because you are not being mindful and present in your decision?  Maybe you are stressed out from work and the cake tastes SO good that it takes your mind off of the stressful feeling.  But what happens after that third piece of cake?  The guilt creeps in, your belly hurts, you think — well, I’ve already eaten three pieces and there are only two left, I certainly don’t want those to go to waste!

Today I encourage you to slow down.  When it is time to eat (please make the time), try sitting down, away from your phone, away from your computer and be present.  Eat SLOWLY.  Don’t think about what you are going to do after you eat, after that meeting, after work, etc.  When we eat slower, we actually taste our food and we become more satisfied with less.  Your body is your temple.  Nourish it.  Cherish it.

Before reaching for that extra slice of pizza or that extra handful of chips, ask yourself — how am I going to feel AFTER I eat this?  Why am I wanting more?  Is this food really going to help me feel less stressed, less sad or less overwhelmed?  The answer is, NO.  It’s not.  So make the choice to put it down, mindfully.  Go on with your day.  Pat yourself on the back for acknowledging the choice YOU made.

So, let’s slow down.  Be mindful of your food choices.  You’ll feel better and I bet you’ll even smile more!  🙂
